PMax is what Google would prefer most advertisers run. It hides the channel-level controls and optimises automatically. Used well, it can outperform manually-managed campaigns; used badly, it cannibalises branded search and burns budget.
The non-negotiables: a brand-keyword exclusion list (otherwise PMax will eat your branded clicks at high CPC), a tight asset group with strong creative, and at least 30 conversions per month to give the algorithm signal.
