Shopify 2.0
The current architecture for Shopify themes (released 2021) which introduced sections everywhere, JSON templates, app blocks, and a more flexible content model than the legacy theme system.
Pre-2.0 Shopify themes had sections only on the homepage; everything else was hard-coded in Liquid templates. Editing a product page meant editing code.
With 2.0, every page is a JSON template composed of sections that editors can add, reorder, and remove. Apps can register their own blocks that drop into any section. The editor experience finally matches the buyer experience.
If you're still on a pre-2.0 theme in 2026, you're paying a hidden tax in every theme update, every app install, and every content change. Migration to 2.0 is one of the highest-leverage things a Shopify store can do.
